Color names

Tea green is a light shade of green. It is a representation of the color of brewed green tea, i.e., the color of the hot green tea after the green tea leaves have been brewed in boiling water. The first recorded use of tea green as a color name in English was in 1858.

The color jasper is named for red jasper, the most commonly known form of jasper; however, as with many gemstones, jasper can be found in many colors, from yellow to brown and even green. The color was formulated by Crayola in 1994 as part of their Gem Tones crayon set.

Magenta (Pantone) refers to the color designated as magenta in the Pantone color system. It is sourced from the Pantone Textile Paper eXtended (TPX) color list as color #17-2036 TPX—Magenta.

The color sky magenta is a representation of the color of the sky near the sun during the brief period during twilight when the pink of sunset transitions into the blue of early evening. This color was one of the colors in the set of Venus Paradise colored pencils, a popular brand of colored pencils in the 1950s. This color is also called medium lavender pink.

Super pink is a very purple-toned shade of pink sourced from the Pantone Textile Paper eXtended (TPX) color list as color #17-2625 TPX—Super Pink.

The color Volt is used by Nike in several of their athletic products, most notably their Air Max 90 Hyperfuse sneakers, which were introduced in 2011. This color is similar to electric lime.

Soap is a color formulated by Crayola in 1994 as one of the colors in its Magic Scent specialty box of colors. This color is a representation of soap scented with lavender, one of the most popular scents for soap.

The color rubber is displayed, showcasing a vivid purplish red tone.

Peru is a web color classified as an orange-brown, with a hue of 30. This color was originally called Peruvian brown with the first recorded use in 1924 of Peruvian brown as a color name in English. The color name was changed to peru in 1987, when this color was formulated as one of the X11 colors, which in the early 1990s became known as the X11 web colors.

Bronze is a metallic brown color which resembles the metal alloy bronze. The first recorded use of bronze as a color name in English was in 1753.

The first recorded use of mahogany red as a color name in English was in 1843.

Electric lime is a Crayola color created in 1990. This tint of lime is popular in psychedelic art.

Persian red is a deep reddish orange earth or pigment from the Persian Gulf composed of a silicate of iron and alumina, with magnesia.It is also called artificial vermillion. The first recorded use of Persian red as a color name in English was in 1895. Other colors associated with Persia include Persian pink, Persian rose, Persian orange, Persian blue and Persian green.

Displayed adjacent is the color Boston University Scarlet, the color which, along with white, is symbolic of Boston University. The color is identical to Utah Crimson.

The color satin sheen gold is displayed. This is the name of the color of the Starfleet command personnel uniform worn by Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise in the TV show and movies Star Trek.

The color copper red is displayed, characterized by its warm, reddish-brown hue reminiscent of the metal copper. The first recorded use of copper red as a color name in English was in 1590.

The first use of the color name bitter lemon was in 2001, when it was formulated as one of the colors on the Xona.com Color List.

Before the invention of printer’s magenta in the 1890s for CMYK printing and electric magenta in the 1980s for computer displays, the original magenta color was created from coal tar dyes and introduced in 1859. This original magenta is sometimes referred to as "rich magenta" to distinguish it from printer’s magenta and electric magenta. Magenta was one of the first aniline dyes, discovered shortly after the Battle of Magenta in 1859, which took place near the town of Magenta in northern Italy. Initially called fuchsine or roseine, the dye's name was changed to "magenta" in 1860 for marketing purposes, after the battle. As a result, the color is indirectly named after the town of Magenta.

Crayola crayons have a color called silver which is a pale tone of silver color. This silver (Crayola) has been a Crayola color since 1903. Crayola silver is not a neutral grayscale color but a warm gray with a very slight tinge of orange-red.

Light French beige is the color called beige on the pourpre.com website, a color list widely popular in France.

Lilac is a color that is a pale violet tone representing the average color of most lilac flowers. The colors of some lilac flowers may be equivalent to pale lilac, rich lilac, or deep lilac. However, there are other lilac flowers that are colored red-violet. The first recorded use of lilac as an English color name was in 1775.

"Smitten" is one of the colors on the Resene Color List, a color list widely popular in Australia and New Zealand. The color was formulated in 2011.

Cal Poly Pomona gold was one of the two official colors of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). The official university colors were green (PMS 349) and gold (PMS 131). Cal Poly Pomona's Office of Public Affairs created the colors for web development and has technical guidelines, copyright and privacy protection; as well as logos and images that developers are asked to follow in the University's Guidelines for using official Cal Poly Pomona logos.

Vegas gold is associated with the glamorous casinos and hotels of the Las Vegas Strip, United States. Vegas gold is one of the official athletic colors for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston College Eagles, Colorado Buffaloes, South Florida Bulls, St. Vincent–St. Mary High School, Vanderbilt Commodores, the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen, and Western Carolina University Catamounts. It is one of the official colors of the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights, and was the type of gold the Pittsburgh Penguins used on their uniforms until they reverted to "Pittsburgh gold", the shade traditionally associated with the city.

Cardinal red, also called cardinal, is a vivid red, which gets its name from the cassocks worn by cardinals. The family of birds takes its name from the color.

The historical name for this color is lavender gray. It is listed in A Dictionary of Color as one of the three major variations of lavender in 1930 along with lavender blue and lavender. (This book also designates a fourth shade of lavender, called old lavender). This color is similar to Prismacolor colored pencil PC 1026, Greyed Lavender.

Alloy orange is one of the colors in the special set of metallic Crayola crayons called Metallic FX, the colors of which were formulated by Crayola in 2001. Although this is supposed to be a metallic color, there is no mechanism for displaying metallic colors on a computer.

French raspberry color is the deep rich tone of raspberry called framboise (French name of the raspberry) in the Pourpre.com color list, a color list widely popular in France.

Cardinal is a vivid red, which may get its name from the cassocks worn by Catholic cardinals (although the color worn by cardinals is scarlet). The cardinal bird also takes its name from the cardinal bishops. The first recorded use of cardinal as a color name in English was in the year 1698.

Cardinal and blue are the official school colors of California State University, Fresno.

This is the Red color in the NCS or Natural Color System (NCS 1080-R). The Natural Color System (NCS) is a color system based on the four unique hues or psychological primary colors red, yellow, green, and blue. The NCS is based on the opponent process theory of vision. The Natural Color System is widely used in Scandinavia.

The color designated as maroon in Crayola crayons since 1949 is a bright medium shade of maroon halfway between brown and rose.

Pictorial carmine is the color that is called Carmín pictórico (Spanish for "pictorial carmine") in the Guía de coloraciones (Guide to colorations) by Rosa Gallego and Juan Carlos Sanz, a color dictionary published in 2005 that is widely popular in the Hispanophone realm. This is a typical tone of carmine pigment used in painting.

Plum is a purple color with a brownish-gray tinge, like that shown in the color box, or a reddish purple, which is a close representation of the average color of the plum fruit. As a quaternary color on the RYB color wheel, plum is an equal mix of the tertiary colors russet and slate. The first recorded use of plum as a color name in English was in 1805.

Deep fuchsia is the color that is called fuchsia in the List of Crayola crayon colors.

Lime is a color that is a shade of yellow-green, so named because it is a representation of the color of the citrus fruit called limes.It is the color that is in between the web color chartreuse and yellow on the color wheel. Alternate names for this color included yellow-green, lemon-lime, lime green, or bitter lime. Lime (color hex code #C0FF00) is a pure spectral color at approximately 564 nanometers on the visible spectrum when plotted on the CIE chromaticity diagram.

Aero blue is a fluorescent greenish-cyan color. Aero blue was used as rainshower in one of the Sharpie permanent markers but not as bright on the marker. However, there is no mechanism for showing fluorescence on a computer screen.

The color known as "powder blue" in Crayola crayons was introduced in 2022 for the Colors of Kindness set.

The color old rose, also known as ashes of rose, was a popular Victorian color. The first recorded use of old rose as a color name in English was in 1892.

Mahogany is a reddish-brown color. It is approximately the color of the wood mahogany. However,the wood itself, like most woods, is not uniformly the same color and is not recognized as a color by most. The first recorded use of mahogany as a color name in English was in 1737.

  Lime is a color that is sometimes referred to as a representation of the color of the citrus fruit called limes. However, in its original form, it referred to the color of the samara fruits of the lime or linden tree (species in the genus Tilia). The first recorded use of lime green as a color name in English was in 1890.  

The color silver sand is a soft, muted shade that resembles the light grayish tones of fine sand mixed with a hint of metallic sheen. The color name silver sand for this silver-tone has been used since 2001 when it was promulgated as one of the colors on the Xona.com Color List.

Burnt orange has been used as a color name for this medium dark shade of orange since 1915. This color is one variation that is used as a school color of The University of Texas at Austin, Auburn University, and Virginia Tech. Burnt orange is not a standard color; for example, it is defined differently by Auburn University and the University of Texas at Austin. The National Hockey League's San Jose Sharks use burnt orange as a secondary color, and it is one of three colors of the National Football League's Cleveland Browns. The Chicago Bears also use it as an alternate color.

Bittersweet shimmer is one of the colors in the special set of metallic Crayola crayons called Metallic FX, the colors of which were formulated by Crayola in 2001. Although this is supposed to be a metallic color, there is no mechanism for displaying metallic colors on a computer.

This color, electric purple, is precisely halfway between violet and magenta and thus fits the artistic definition of purple. An old name for this color, used by Robert Ridgway in his 1912 book on color nomenclature, Color Standards and Color Nomenclature, is true purple.

Twin Bed is so named since its HEX color code spells out "BED" twice.The color is also recognized for bearing very close semblance to that of many commonly-used bed sheets.
