The subject of this print is an italian cowherd and a group of three oxen. One of the latter seen from behind is standing to the left, the second, also standing, is a little distant, almost in the middle of the print; he is directed to the right, but his slightly upturned head is seen entirely from the front. Finally, the third, lying down, is seen from three quarters, and turned to the left. We see on the right, at a small distance, the herdsman sleeping on the ground, lying on his left side. His head reaches the second plane, and his legs are extended towards the front; it is seen in perfect foreshortening. This whole group is on the edge of a river which flows across the width of the board, and beyond which a chain of mountains appears, at the foot of one of which, which is to the right, we see roman factories furnished with trees.
