The canvas, with which its author won first prize in the 1st class competition of the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando in 1796, shows manuel de godoy, valid of king charles iv of spain, as the architect of the peace signed between spain and france in the treaty of basel, which was signed by both kingdoms in 1795. Godoy appears wearing the scallop of the order of the golden fleece and the mantle of the order of charles iii, and presents peace, in the form of an olive branch, to king charles iv, and on the left the pagan god mercury, who represents the diplomat domingo de iriarte, announces peace to the spanish and french armies.
