V. G. Perov. Rural procession with the cross on easter. 1861. Oil on canvas. 71. 5 × 89 cm. Inv. 359. Tretyakov gallery, moscow, russia. The correct name for this event is not a “procession with the cross”, but a “walking with the cross”. What is the point here? the priest had a direct duty to congratulate all orthodox christians living within the boundaries of his parish on easter and christmas, visiting their homes with the holy cross and icons. The fact is that during the walk with the cross from house to house, the owner not only treated the churchmen to wine, but also gave the required tithe in money and the fruits of his labor. The clergy, especially those of lower rank, lived on this often meager alms throughout the year. The priests themselves were also interested in these visits. In addition to receiving money and other donations, they could thereby show respect to influential people who could influence the decision of the peasant world. And in the end, congratulating the parishioners, which was indeed the priest's duty, was a painful test of his sobriety, considering that the priest went around several villages and hamlets in one day. It is not surprising that many young priests with a seminary and especially an academic education refused to do this, but then complaints were filed against them in the consistory and the dean from wealthy parishioners and even choir members subordinate to the priest. - archpriest alexander (ryabkov), in: dirty, slovenly, rude, stupid and probably a drunkard. .
