Portrait of Sir William Sharington, Hans Holbein the Younger, 1540–43

The drawing has suffered from rubbing. The ear, contour of forehead, etc. Have been retouched by another hand. Holbein's left-handed shading can be seen in the hat. Sir william sharington, or sherington (c. 1495–1553), was page of the king's robes. In 1546, he was appointed vice-treasurer of the mint at bristol, where he became implicated in the frauds of thomas seymour, 1st baron sudeley, in the reign of edward vi.
