The drawing has suffered from rubbing. The ear, contour of forehead, etc. Have been retouched by another hand. Holbein's left-handed shading can be seen in the hat. Sir william sharington, or sherington (c. 1495–1553), was page of the king's robes. In 1546, he was appointed vice-treasurer of the mint at bristol, where he became implicated in the frauds of thomas seymour, 1st baron sudeley, in the reign of edward vi. He was pardoned and in 1552 became the sheriff of wiltshire. Reference
