The sitter, ellen julia teed (1822 - 1884), married robert hollond, mp for hastings, in 1840. She was an authoress and philanthropist, and held a salon in paris which attracted the leading liberals of the day. She presented boucher's 'pan and syrinx' to the national gallery in 1880.;
robert hollond (1808-1877) funded and then took part in establishing a distance ballooning record with thomas monck mason and charles green.
