Ichikawa danjūrō viii as the ghost of sasano gonzo seeking vengeance for his wrongful death. He was executed at suzugamori, the execution grounds outside edo (old tokyo), for supposedly falling in love with another's wife. He still wears the signs of his execution - a robe covered with blood and a broken crossbar tied to his arms. Right sheet of a diptych. Date: 1849 1st lunar month (late Edo). Place of creation: Edo (present-day Tokyo, Japan). Dimensions: height: 36.3 cm (14.2 in); width: 25 cm (9.8 in). Medium: pigments on mulberry paper. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
