This head, along with its companion piece head of a male saint, was already in this format in the 16th century in the amerbach collection, but the pair were certainly cut from one or more larger panels of a retable or altarpiece. In 1586, basilius amerbach noted these pieces as "h. Holbein's first work", though doubts have occasionally been raised about the attribution. References
