Title: young america. C. H. Lilienthal, n. Y
abstract: an advertising card or box label for new york tobacco distributor c. H. Lilienthal, featuring the figure of "young america. " the boy is a much younger counterpart of the central figure in "the young america schottisch" (no. 1855-5). Both figures wear a short jacket, bold plaid trousers, and silk tie. Both prints, loosely but skillfully drawn, appear to be the work of a single artist. In keeping with the militaristic spirit of the present work, the youth stands holding a large, billowing american flag on the ramparts of a fortress. Behind him is a large cannon and another american flag. Physical description: 1 print on wove paper: lithograph printed in 5 colors;image 25. 3 x 18. 7 cm.
