Window Frame, design by Hans Holbein the Younger, c.1530

Window Frame, design by Hans Holbein the Younger, c.1530

Design for a window frame. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, over preliminary chalk drawing. 26. 3 × 10. 1 cm, kunstmuseum basel. The design shows only the left-hand side of the window frame, the other side assumed as a mirror image. "both the skilfully and confidently applied wash, which lends the motifs a sculptural, three-dimensional quality, and the strokes showing the most subtle vibrations, give the motifs a convincing presence. Charles patin (1676) used the motif of the frame for the border of the frontispiece of his edition of erasmus of rotterdam's stultitiae laus" (müller, 410). Date: c.1530.
