Dido and Aeneas in the cave, Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert, 1646

Dido, queen of carthage, takes in aeneas, who had landed in africa while fleeing troy. While both are hunting, they are caught in a storm and seek shelter in a cave. They confess their love to each other. When aeneas has to leave carthage again, dido throws herself on his sword and commits suicide, but not before having sworn eternal enmity between carthage and the descendants of aeneas.
