Whither my Love! Ah! Whither art thou gone, Isaac Cruikshank, 1798

A street scene. An artisan staggers forward, dismayed at the disappearance of a woman who has fallen head first down a cellar whose flap has been left open. Her legs and petticoats issue from the small aperture. Behind is a window in which are bottles inscribed 'cordials & compounds'. A placard of clasped hands suggests a brothel. In the man's hat is thrust a pipe from which smoke issues. 28 april 1798 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1798. Dimensions: Height: 282 mm (trimmed); Width: 201 mm. Medium: paper. Collection: British Museum. Whither my Love! Ah! Whither art thou gone (BM 1935,0522.7.5)
