A view of the attack on 15 september 1804 by a french squadron, commanded by rear-admiral charles-alexandre léon durand, comte de linois (1761-1848), on hms centurion, commanded by captain james lind (c. 1765-1823) and two merchant ships off vizagapatam in the bay of bengal. Napoleonic wars (1803-15). In this minor naval action the french captured the princess charlotte, but the centurion survived the attack of the overwhelming french forces and this was greeted as a great achievement for which lind was knighted. The date of 18 september, engraved in the title, appears to be an error; the action is recorded as having occurred on the 15th of that month.
