View of Fort Picu on the island of Madeira, Karl Bryullov, between 1849 and 1850
Like other landscape paintings by briullov in water colour, the view is devoid of people. It keeps an epic feeling though its dimensions are not relatively big. The landscape employs a reddish-brown colour range which is characteristic of the artist’s late works. The artist’s temperament is seen in the expressive and dynamic brush strokes. Briullov uses the effect of double illuminations so beloved by the romantics, juxtaposing the rose of sky at twilight with storm clouds. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1849 and 1850. Dimensions: height: 65 cm (25.5 in); width: 77 cm (30.3 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Tretyakov Gallery. View of Fort Picu on the island of Madeira by Karl Briullov
