Drawing by william alexander, draughtsman of the macartney embassy to china in 1793. View of a stone bridge in the vicinity of the city of sou-tcheou with city walls in the background. Alexander wrote that he has seen many bridges of such design built from coarse marble during the embassy's trip from han-tcheou to chusan, some of which were very light, and elegant. The temporary ornament over the center of the arch was erected as a compliment to the british ambassador. Six soldiers are standing on the bridge by way of salute to the embassy. Image taken from the costume of china, illustrated in forty-eight coloured engravings, published in london in 1805. Date: circa 1800.
