This work, together with the one titled in ictu oculi, was commissioned from juan de valdés leal to be placed in the sotocoro of the hospital de la caridad in seville, and as in the paintings of the vanitas genre, they allude to the banality of earthly life and the universality of death, although they are also united with the primary purpose of the brotherhood of charity of seville, which was to bury the executed and homeless people of the city, like other similar brotherhoods existing in spain at that time.
