The work represents saint clare of assisi during the siege of the city of assisi by the muslims or saracens, and the saint appears carrying the monstrance with the sacred form and presiding over the procession of nuns who, upon leaving their convent, miraculously caused panic among the muslims who were besieging the city. This canvas was part of the painting titled santa clara stops the saracens at the gates of the convent of san damiano, which was painted by juan de valdés leal between 1652 and 1653 destined for the convent of santa clara de carmona. However, in 1910 jorge bonsor bought the work for 5,000 pesetas and divided the original painting into two fragments so that they could be adapted to a square format, and hence the two paintings of the defeat of the saracens and the one of the procession of santa clara with the sacred form currently exist, which are also preserved in the upper chapter house of the town hall of seville, although another small fragment of the original work by juan de valdés leal survives.
