The portrait of eleonora of toledo, wife to cosimo i de' medici, grand duke of tuscany, is part of the so-called "serie aulica" (or "of the most serene princes"), a collection of portraits of the most important members of the house of medici. The work, commissioned by francesco i, cosimo and eleonora's son, was payed on 30 march 1584. It's a copy with variation of the duchess' famous portrait painted by agnolo bronzino in 1545. The background changes from a night landscape, painted with precious blue pigment, to a simpler green drape, while the children is not giovanni but his younger brother garzia. Object Type: painting.
