Two smalschips becalmed RMG PV5227, circa 1665

Two smalschips becalmed a characteristic compositional study that combines close observation of the smalschip (a dutch sprit-rigged transport vessel) with the subtle but clearly defined effects of a calm day. To the right is a port broadside view of a smalschip with a vessel close to starboard and another beyond. Another small vessel occupies the left side of the page. The drawing is inscribed in the sky: ‘l’ to indicate the direction of light. Two smalschips becalmed. Date: circa 1665. Dimensions: Primary support: 150 mm x 206 mm; Mount: 316 mm x 480 mm. Collection: Fine art.
