Oil painting on canvas, margate, kent, by joseph mallord william turner, ra (london 1775 - chelsea 1851), circa 1808. A seascape, the location of which is disputed (tate/t03876). In the left foreground are three fishing smacks with nine men in them and on the stern board of the foremost the name 'hastings'. A rowing boat is at right and in the left centre distance cliffs end abruptly with, in the left distance open sea. In the centre and right is a town, a breakwater and shipping in a harbour. A ruin and a square tower are silhouetted against the sky. Date: circa 1808.
