Turkish fortifications being shelled- Dardanelles campaign, 1915 RMG PW1753, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1915

Turkish fortifications being shelled: dardanelles campaign, 1915 signed by the artist, lower left. This subject from the dardanelles operation dates from fairly late in 1915. On the right is a quite accurate depiction of the old italian battleship 'sardegna', launched on 20 september 1890 and completed on 16 february 1895. She was employed as a troop carrier in 1915. The centre two twin-funnelled ships, with pole masts and high fighting tops on both of them, are not readily identifiable since those features do not match known vessels of any nationality. The ship on the left is the old french battleship 'massena', launched on 24 july 1895 and completed in 1898. She was scuttled as part of a breakwater at cape helles in the dardanelles on 9 november 1915. Date: circa 1915. Dimensions: Sheet: 445 x 557 mm. Collection: Fine art.
