Hieronimus bosch (1453-1516) is one of the greatest masters of dutch painting. He depicted a wide variety of secular and religious subjects with great imagination in his animated, multi-figure paintings. The surgeon and the healing doctor were popular subjects in dutch painting. In the paintings, trepanning or the removal of an arrowhead from the patient's head was always considered effective. Another frequent subject was the "removal of the stone of folly". It is not clear whether this charlatanry or perhaps this "psychotherapeutic" procedure was actually carried out. One thing is certain: trepanning played a disproportionately large role in surgery. In addition to "technical brilliance", it was also evidently about cult traditions. It cannot be ruled out that bosch's painting is a mockery of doctors. Object Type: painting. Genre: allegory. Date: between circa 1494 and circa 1516.
