A view of the attack and defeat of a french squadron commanded by jean-baptiste-françois bompart (1757-1842) by a detachment of british ships commanded by sir john borlase warren (1753-1822) near tory island, ireland, 12 october 1798. French revolutionary wars (1792-1802); irish rebellion (1798). Ships: l-r: l' hoche, robust, magnamime, la coquille, l' ambuscade, foudroyant, amelia, canada, la loire, la resolue, le remain, melampus, l' immortalite, le semillante, anson, ethalion, la bellone. One of a pair of prints, the companion print is at rcin 735074. A. The upper case letters are engraved in outline and some of the text is engraved very faintly, indicating, perhaps, that this is a proof copy. This action is known as the battle of tory island, or the battle of donegal, and also the battle of lough swilly or warren's action. Warren's victory over the french ended the french attempts to land forces in ireland at this time.
