Title-page design for a New Testament, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1535

Title-page design for a new testament. Woodcut, 10. 9 × 6. 2 cm, staatliche graphische sammlung, munich. This design was for the title-page to a small new testament, which the royal coat of arms shows was intended, like the coverdale bible, to be dedicated to henry viii. The design was adapted for the title-page to philipp melanchthon's de ecclesiae autoritatie et de veterum scriptis libellus, published by wendelin rihel in strasbourg in 1539. The woodblock was used in england in 1575 (foister, p. 138). Date: circa 1535.
