Three ships before the wind RMG PW6927, circa 1675

Three ships before the wind in the centre, a port quarter view of a ship before a light breeze under fore course, topsails and topgallants; towing a boat with two men in it. In the left background, a ship with her main course set also, but her fore topgallant still on the cap; and on the right, another ship with only fore course and topsails set. Land can be seen in the right distance. This is a pencil and wash drawing by the younger, signed with part of the signature ‘w. V. Vj’. The wash has been added by a later hand to give the ship in the centre an 18th century look. Three ships before the wind. Date: circa 1675. Dimensions: Sheet: 186 x 301 mm; Mount: 405 mm x 558 mm. Collection: Fine art.
