The pool
an etching of the upper pool by marine artist william lionel wyllie (1851-1931). Wyllie emphasises the wharves on the north (city) bank of the thames, with tower bridge - its bascules raised to allow shipping to pass - visible through the haze in the distance. In the foreground, stevedores are busy discharging cargo from a lighter. In the lower left margin it is inscribed, ‘early state worked up in wash’. For another version, see paf0707. The pool. Date: early 20th century. Dimensions: Sheet: 464 x 291 mm; Mount: 558 x 406 mm. Collection: Fine art.
