The Pharisee and the Publican, woodcut by Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1538–40

The pharisee and the publican, published in thomas cranmer's catechismus. Woodcut, 4. 2 × 4. 9 cm, british museum, london. One of a group of prints relating to the dissolution of the monasteries during the english reformation. Figures in the pictures are depicted as monks, in less than flattering situations. The woodcuts were produced at a time when reformers satirised monks mercilessly. Date: c. 1538–40.
