The esplanade., James Gillray, 1797

The esplanade., James Gillray, 1797

George iii walks in back view with an awkward shuffle, his head turned in profile to the left to greet a tall general who bows. On the right another officer waits, hat in hand, for recognition. They are lord cathcart (1755-1843), then major-general, see bmsat 9564, and general david dundas (under whom cathcart had served in holland in 1794-5), see bmsat 9026. Above the king's head is a scroll: 'medio tutissimus ibis'. A semicircle of loyal and provincial subjects, chiefly ladies, stretches across the design, facing the king. In the foreground on the extreme left and right are an officer in back view and a (caricatured) elderly man in top-boots. 1 june 1797 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1797.
