The Delights of the MalmaisonA saunter through the park in 1804, 1898

This plate depicts two women in the gardens of malmaison, the château that was refurbished by napoleon's first wife, josephine. The château is located several miles outside of paris. The woman dressed in green is wearing a more modern style of city dress or 'costume de ville' where her dress is shorter and does not train on the ground behind her. She is wearing a corsage froncé or gathered at the chest. The waist on the dress remains high but her sleeves are short and balloon out. The woman on the right wears a hat 'à la polonaise' with a square top as well as a spencer jacket, modeled after the english style over her long, empire-waist dress. Date: 1898. Dimensions: height: 15 cm (5.9 in); width: 10 cm (3.9 in). Medium: colored plate. Collection: Brown University Library.
