The Ambassadors, Hans Holbein the Younger, 1533

The Ambassadors, Hans Holbein the Younger, 1533

Detail of double portrait of jean de dinteville and georges de selve, called the ambassadors, oil and tempera on oak wood, national gallery, london. This lower shelf between the two ambassadors shows a terrestrial globe, a lute, a lutheran hymn book, an arithmetic book, dividers, and a bag of wooden flutes. A theme of disharmony is suggested, perhaps referring to the religious context of the ambassadors' mission: the lute has a broken string, the arithmetic book lies open on a division page, and one of the flutes juts out from the rest (buck, 98). Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1533. Place of creation: London. Dimensions: height: 207 cm (81.4 in) ; width: 209 cm (82.2 in). Medium: oil on oak panel. Depicted People: Jean de Dinteville, Georges de Selve. Collection: National Gallery. The Ambassadors, detail of globe, lute, and books, by Hans Holbein the Younger
