Table of flags worn by British ships at the Battle of the Glorious First of June, 1794 RMG PU8871, Nicholas Pocock

Table of flags worn by british ships at the battle of the glorious first of june, 1794 both the writing and drawing of this table of distinguishing flags of the ships of lord howe's fleet suggest that pocock drew it up as a visual aide-memoire for paintings of the action of 1 june 1794. Flag officers' names are included with their ships (including george montagu, who was not present having been detached southward). Howe is shown as flying the union flag at the main, as commander-in-chief, in 'queen charlotte' (centre division). That flag itself is also in the museum collection. There is a similar table for the battle of camperdown in 1797 (pad8872 and pad8873) in this group of pocock studio drawings but the format and writing differs, and in that case it may have been supplied to him by someone else in the fleet, since having such tables was necessary for operational purposes. Table of flags worn by british ships at the battle of the glorious first of june, 1794. Date: 1794. Dimensions: Mount: 206 mm x 130 mm. Collection: Fine art.
