Study of right hand of Erasmus, with sketch of face, by Hans Holbein the Younger

Study of right hand of erasmus of rotterdam and portrait study. Silverpoint, black crayon and red chalk on grey-primed paper, 20 × 28 cm, louvre, paris. This sketch, along with another of both hands, can be linked with holbein's portrait of erasmus with renaissance pilaster. The sketch of erasmus's face seems to have been added later, perhaps at the time of holbein's roundel portrait of the scholar (which it resembles), as he looks more aged than at the time of the 1523 portraits (müller, pp. 288–89).
