Smalschips close-hauled in a breeze
this late drawing by van de velde, signed 'w. V. V. J. ' in the lower right corner, is freely drawn and depicts a group of four small craft. The one in the foreground is a smalschip (a small dutch transport vessel) with another beyond her to the right. In the distance on the left are two other small craft which are difficult to distinguish because the drawing has become rubbed. Smalschips close-hauled in a breeze. Date: circa 1700.
