Inro with Chrysanthemums by a Stream, Shibata Zeshin

A slightly oval black lacquer four case inro. Design around the inro shows chrysanthemums of various types near a stream with waves. The design in slightly raised work of black lacquer with half of the flowers in gold and half in silver lacquer on a ground of black lacquer with stylized waves formed by combing the lacquer. The top and bottom partially covered by a textured grey-black lacquer ("ishime"). Inscribed in gold on the bottom of the lower compartment. The interior of "roiro. " the cord channels are internal. Date: mid 19th century (Edo; Meiji). Place of creation: Edo (present-day Tokyo, Japan). Dimensions: inro: 8.2 × 5.7 × 2 cm (3.2 × 2.2 × 0.7 in). Medium: gold, lacquer, silver.
