Inscribed: "the challenger, commanded by captain fitzclarence sailing from portsmouth with dispatches for lisbon, oct 31. 1827". When william iv was still duke of clarence in 1827, he became lord high admiral and, in july, to mark his authority, inspected the fleet at spithead. The following month the duchess of clarence viewed the russian squadron.
