The Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 RMG PV2714, William Lionel Wyllie

The battle of jutland, 31 may 1916 this drawing shows the position at approximately 18. 30, immediately after the commencement of the deployment of the grand fleet to port by divisions to a course south-east by east. On the left of the picture is the battle cruiser force of 'lion', 'princess royal', 'tiger' and 'new zealand' steaming hard to get ahead of the fleet. In the centre are the battleships of the 3rd division, led by jellicoe's fleet flagship 'iron duke' and followed by 'royal oak' and 'superb': the 'canada', last ship of the division, is off to the right and yet to commence her turn. Astern of the 'superb' is 'benbow', the flagship of the 4th division , followed (though not well seen or named on the drawing) by the 'bellerophon', 'temeraire, and the 'vanguard', which is off to the right beyond the 'canada'. Wyllie has identified all the ships except 'bellerophon', 'temeraire' and 'vanguard' in notes along the bottom of the sheet. Date: 1916. Dimensions: 253 mm x 354 mm. Collection: Fine art.
