The arkansas traveler, painting by edward payson washbourne (washburn), c. 1855. According to several sources, the original painting was donated to the arkansas history commission, in poor shape, by the washbourne family in 1957 where an attempted restoration resulted in the original work being inadequately painted over. Several 19th-century copies exist, as well as lithographed engravings (b/w and colored) by leopold grozelier (1859) and currier and ives (1870). The 1859 grozier lithographs were commissioned by the artist and used the original work as a reference subject. Date: 31 December 1856.
