Seascape, Cobo Bay RMG BHC0056, John Everett, 1911

Seascape, cobo bay a sketch evoking the dramatic effect of sea and sky on a stormy day at cobo bay, guernsey. The waves are shown moving across the surface of the image diagonally to the right. The sky is low on the horizon and solid patches of grey cloud stretch horizontally across the sketch. The effect of light through clouds creates a focal point as it is also reflected on the surface of the water in the foreground on the right. Everett stayed cobo bay, guernsey, in the channel islands between january and march in 1911. He was there for three months to paint the sea, staying at the rockmount hotel which had a view directly out to sea. He also revisited the area for three months between 12 january and march 1937 when he rented a studio on the cliffs at grande rocque near cobo bay. On this occasion he noted that the weather was very wet and he was not able to get out to do much painting. The painting is inscribed 'cobo' verso. Seascape. Date: 1911. Dimensions: Painting: 253 x 356 mm. Collection: Oil paintings.
