Seascape, Porthleven RMG BHC0033, John Everett, 1919

Seascape, porthleven a rapidly executed sketch, loosely painted, showing the patterning of waves under a stormy sky. The sketch focuses on the peaks and troughs of the waves and the depiction of the white crests. The sky has been sketchily painted but the strong use of colour and loose brush strokes create a dramatic effect reflecting the turbulence of the sky. Everett has allowed the ground colour of the paper to show through to emphasize the effect. Following the end of world war i, everett went to helston in cornwall from 28 january 1919; he then moved to porthleven before renting a studio at sennen coven until 11 may. He remained there because of its good view of the sea. The painting is inscribed 'porth' verso. Seascape. Object Type: painting. Date: 1919. Dimensions: Painting: 253 x 357 mm. Collection: Oil paintings.
