Scabbard with Triumphal Procession, design by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1530

Scabbard with Triumphal Procession, design by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1530

Design for a scabbard with triumphal procession. Pen and ink, 67 × 29. 2 cm, kunstmuseum basel. The design shows the triumphal procession, led by elphants, of a roman general in a chariot. The drawing is in the loose style holbein used early in the design process. Later "clean" copies by other hands survive, perhaps made for goldsmiths or for woodcuts (müller, 407–409). Date: circa 1530.
