Saint apollonia, hours of stephen chevalier, illuminated by jean fouquet. Musée condé, chantilly. Fouquet staged the martyrdom of saint apollonia as a mystery. A curtain of trees lined with wattle borders the front of the stage. With demonstrative gestures, the executioners, on the orders of decius, tie up the martyr, immobilize her head by pulling her hair and pull out her teeth. While a madman, with an obscene gesture, wanders around with his hobby horse, the stage manager, baton in hand, directs the whole play and the musicians. The set and stands close the theatre: on the left, paradise, in the centre, the spectators and on the right, hell. Object Type: book of hours, illuminated manuscript. Genre: religious art.
