Description a tree house in the ij
in the middle a tree house on stilts, seen across the ij. The building stands on a platform with railings and fences and is equipped with a screen on the right against sun and rain. A staircase leads to the water. Just as on the amstel, the entrance to the city on the ij was also protected by double rows of poles. There were openings in these pilings at regular intervals through which ships could enter the city's ports. At night these passages were closed with chains or trees. The entrances were operated and monitored by tree guards, one at each passage. Document type: drawing
