Portrait of francis i
francesco i (naples 1777 - 1830) at the time of the portrait was still crown prince, since he ascended the throne only in 1825. The painting belongs to a series of ten portraits depicting the members of the family of francesco i, painted by cammarano, between 1818 and 1820, as studies for the creation of a large canvas which was supposed to celebrate the royal family. The work was commissioned by francesco i to solemnly celebrate the sixty-ninth birthday of his father ferdinand i, which fell on 30 march 1820, as well as the arrival in 1819 of the bust of antonio canova (see oa sheet: 00051938, inv. No. 951 of 1977/78). Giuseppe cammarano was a pupil of domenico chelli and his collaborator. In naples, he soon came into contact with the german neoclassical trend and worked in the workshop of f. Fischetti. After two years of bourbon retirement in rome (1786), he returned to naples and was involved in the most important court commissions. In 1806 he was given the chair of nude and the appointment of deputy director of the academy of drawing (replacing d. Mondo), then moving on to the chair of landscape in 1822. After another two years of retirement, in 1827 he held the chair of drawing together with angelini. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1819 and 1820. Dimensions: height: 60 cm (23.6 in); width: 47 cm (18.5 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Palace of Caserta.
