Rio de janeiro
a cruise to south america is not recorded in 'we were one' (1935), m. A. Wyllie's memoir of her husband, but this and other watercolours are evidence that the wyllie's visited rio. Another drawing in the series is dated 1914, indicating that they cruised to south america before the outbreak of world war i in august of that year, 'on board the now luxurious liners' as mrs wyllie wrote twenty years later. Rio's unmistakeable sugar loaf mountain (pão de açùcar) is visible on the right. The watercolour demonstrates wyllie's ability to adapt to painting exotic landscapes as well as typical northern scenes and seascapes. Rio de janeiro. Date: 1914. Dimensions: 268 x 432 mm.
