Cardinal de Fleury, Hyacinthe Rigaud, 1731

Cardinal de Fleury, Hyacinthe Rigaud, 1731

The french prime minister, cardinal de fleury, is seated amid textile splendour. To one side is a table with documents and books. The portrait was an official gift and a confirmation of the political alliance with sweden. Rigaud, whose career – like his subject’s – flowered under louis xiv, continued to paint in the baroque manner. There are fourteen versions of this portrait, meaning that many were made with the help of assistants. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1731. Dimensions: height: 156 cm (61.4 in) ; width: 125 cm (49.2 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Depicted People: André-Hercule de Fleury. Collection: Nationalmuseum.
