This monarch, who was nicknamed the cruel by his enemies and the justicier by his supporters, ruled castile from 1350 until his assassination in 1369 after his defeat in the battle of montiel, and was always linked to the city of seville and its royal alcázar. And the painter joaquín domínguez bécquer was inspired to make this portrait by contemporary chronicles of the monarch that describe him as white-skinned, with a majestic face and with blonde hair and blue eyes.
