A Polish Nobleman, Rembrandt, 1637

Half figure of a man in oriental costume. Jan nowak-jezioranski identifies him as andrzej rej, a grandson of mikołaj rej, a leading polish poet and prose writer of the renaissance. Andrzej rej (ca. 1584-1641) was a governor of libusza, calvinist activist, and a diplomat who was sent on a diplomatic mission in 1637 to the danish, dutch and english courts.
