Prise de Tours en 1189, Jean Fouquet, circa 1455

Capture of tours in 1189 great chronicles of france, illuminated by jean fouquet, tours, circa 1455-1460 paris, bnf, department of manuscripts, french 6465, fol. 223 (second book of philippe auguste) during the campaign that the king of france led against the english, on june 23, 1189, the city of tours was taken by the army of philippe auguste. The king and his procession enter the city where the fleur-de-lis banners are already flying on the two towers which defend the gate. We can see in a very romantic way in the background the fortifications, initially built in the 10th century, of the town of châteauneuf formed around the basilica of saint-martin de tours (center right), in which we can see the castle of tours on the left (as it was only modified in the 13th century!) while the union of these two parts of the city, which are not contiguous, in the same enlarged enclosure has not yet been made at the time of the victory of 1189. But it was on the other hand a reality at the time of the creation of the illumination more than 270 years later. Date: circa 1455.
