Plate 40: bellerophon slaying the chimera: bellerophon mounted on the winged horse pegasus charges through the air, driving his spear into the shoulder of the chimera; the fire-breathing hybrid beast with a lion's head, a snake's head for its tail and a goat's head protruding from its back, rears back from the force of bellerophon's blow; a skull and bones appear below the rocky cropping in the foregound at the right; to the left the landscape opens into the distance; after peter paul rubens; illustration for gaspar gevaerts' "pompa introitus" (antwerp, 1641) etching.
