Plate 25: philip iv appoints prince ferdinand governor of the netherlands; at right philip iv, flanked by minerva and jupiter, rises from his throne to bid farewell to prince ferdinand, whom he dispatches to the spanish netherlands; cardinal-infante ferdinand, newly appointed governor, holds his commander's baton in his right hand, turning his head to regard the king as he descends the steps; at centre, two allegorical figures bearing emblems of war and peace preceed ferdinand; at left stands the female personification of grief, heavily veiled and clasping her hands; kneeling beside her and accompanied by a lion is belgica, raising her arms and imploring the beneficence of the deceased infanta isabella above; the infanta, seated in the clouds beside the symbolic grouping of a mother and her children, points with approval to her successor prince ferdinand; after peter paul rubens; illustration for gaspar gevaerts' "pompa introitus" (antwerp, 1641) etching.
